2011 |
Anja Amtoft Wynns received her BSc in Biology from Rutgers University and her MSc jointly from The City University of New York and The New York Botanical Garden. She is currently a PhD student of Insect Pathology under the supervision of Jørgen Eilenberg and Annette Bruun Jensen at the University of Copenhagen in the Department of Agriculture and Ecology and Centre for Social Evolution. Anja is presenting the paper "Evidence for self-medication: host plant choice of an oligolectic bee and pathogenic Ascosphaera spp." coauthored with Jørgen Eilenberg and Annette B. Jensen.
Rob Anderson received his Bachelor’s degree in biology from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, USA, in 1995. He then taught life, earth and physical science to secondary school students for seven years before returning to graduate school to study insects. In 2007, he earned a Master’s degree in entomology from the University of Delaware, USA investigating the role of stormwater pond design and subsequent nutrient mitigation practices on larva mosquito abundance. In 2008, he joined the Penn State University department of Entomology as a Ph.D. candidate under Dr. Matthew Thomas to study how to immune challenges may affect the vector competence of insect disease vectors. For his doctoral thesis, he is investigating the effects of Beauveria bassiana infection on the themoregulatory behavior of house flies (Musca domestica L.), and how these changes impact fly fitness and vector competence. Rob is presenting the paper “House flies (Musca domestica L.) delay fungal pathogenesis by fevering – at a cost”. |

Vicky received her BSc in Biology from the University of Bath, and her MSc in Ecology from the University of Wales, Bangor. She is currently a PhD student in Entomology under the supervision of Professor Keith Charnley at the University of Bath (UK). She will be presenting two papers at the SIP meeting entitled ‘Cold-seeking behaviour in Drosophila during mycosis: consequences for host and pathogen’ co-authored with Prof. Keith Charnley & Dr Nick Priest, and ‘The inhibitory effect of the fungal toxin, destruxin-A, on behavioural fever in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria’ co-authored with Dr Gary Lock and Prof. Keith Charnley. |

Sastia received her B.Sc. in Biology from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia and her M.Eng. in Biotechnology from Osaka University. She is currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Takuya Nihira at the International Center for Biotechnology, Osaka University, Japan where she is majoring in Biotechnology. She has received several awards including the P.T. Kondur Petroleum S.A. Indonesia Academic Achievement Award for undergraduate studies and the UNESCO Fellowship from the Japanese Government and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Sports and Technology Scholarship for postgraduate studies. She will be presenting a paper entitled “Utilization of entomopathogenic fungi for the control of plant pathogenic fungi”. Her co-authors are Hiroshi Kinoshita, Fumio Ihara, Yasuhiro Igarashi and Takuya Nihira. |

Congratulations to Ms. Sopher Ondiaka, winner of the 2008 Division of Fungi Student Travel Award. Ms. Ondiaka received her B.Sc. in Zoology and Botany from the University of Nairobi, and her M.Sc. in Agricultural Entomology also from the University of Nairobi. She is currently a Ph.D. student in Medical Entomology at Wageningen University, in the laboratory of Dr. Bart G.J. Knols. Ms. Ondiaka has received several awards, including a Wageningen University Sandwich PhD Fellowship; a MASHAV Fellowship from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel; a Rockefeller Foundation M.Sc Coursework and Research Scholarship; an Earth Watch Fellowship; and a Tropical Biology Association Scholarship. She will be presenting a paper entitled “Effects of fungal infection on the host-seeking behaviour and fecundity of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae.” Her co-authors are Tullu Bukhari, Marit Farenhorst, Willem Takken, and Bart G.J. Knols. |
